Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology was the first University to run the BSc. Medical Laboratory Technology programme in Ghana which admitted its first batch of students in September, 1998. The Medical Laboratory Technology at KNUST runs a four-year Bachelor’s Degree Programme and provides intensive theoretical and practical teaching for her members, building on the knowledge in basic sciences. This prepares our students to become professional Laboratory Technologist/Scientists capable of effectively delivering laboratory services to their clients and significant others. Our curriculum is innovative and reflects identified healthcare needs and the diversity of the Ghanaian Population. Our work is practical and research-focused. These empower our staff, students and alumni to be amongst the most sought-after in Ghana and beyond.


In September, 2018 the Medical Laboratory Technology programme which previously in the department of Medical Laboratory Technology was changed to department of Medical Diagnostics. The Medical Laboratory Technology exclusively has an estimate number of 400 consisting of Students, Teaching and Non-Teaching Staffs.


THE KWAME NKRUMAH UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY – MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION (KNUST-MELTSA) embodies Students admitted into and therefore pursuing BSc. in Medical Laboratory Technology at KNUST.
The association is anchored on the mission; to provide excellent training to students to enable them become Medical Laboratory Technologists who are able to:
i. Perform basic clinical laboratory investigations.
ii. Communicate results and manage resources under minimum supervision.
iii. Apply principles of safety in the work environment.
iv. Apply basic principles in learning new techniques.
v. Build up their capacity for any prospective national and international certificate programmes.

The association started in the year 2003 with her First President currently as Dr. Richard Orleans Samuel Pobee who is currently a Consultant Chemical Pathologist. 


The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Medical Laboratory Technology Students’ Association (KNUST-MELTSA) performs significant roles to the benefit of its members. Its main aims and objectives include;
i. To co-ordinate the activities and promote the welfare of all members.
ii. To promote friendship and cordial relations between its members, members of sister
Associations in the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, members of other sister Medical Laboratory Technology Students’ Associations with similar objectives and all members and students of the health services.
iii. To disseminate knowledge of Medical Laboratory through publications, meetings, lectures symposia and other appropriate media.
iv. To create a forum and an opportunity for learning about Medical laboratory and other related professions.
v. To integrate members of the association into the mother association while in school and afterwards.
vi. To foster international relationship between the association and other bodies.


The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Medical Laboratory Technology Students’ Association (KNUST-MELTSA) also Carry out the following in order to help the good people of Ghana and beyond.

i. Create awareness of the general public on diseases prevention and disease treatment.
ii. Public Health Outreaches to Communities and Villages.
iii. Health Education and Radio stations and television stations.
iv. Free Health Screening to the Prisons, Students and People of all walks of life.

2. ASSOCIATION’S CONSTITUTION

The constitution is a legal document and agreement which governs and guards the conduct of members of the Association. All members must abide by the constitution, and members must know that the *Constitution* is the Law. The current Constitution was adopted in the year 2009 .

3. ASSOCIATION’S STRUCTURE

According to the Constitution which governs the association, Article 5 states: 

“There shall be an Executive Committee consisting of the following officers elected by the secret ballot.”

  1. President
  2. Vice President
  3. General Secretary
  4. Organizing Secretary
  5. Financial Secretary
  6. Women’s Commissioner
  7. Health Officer
  8. Public Relations Officer
  9. Editor-In-Chief


5(ii). The President, Public Relations Officer and Health Officer should have spent at least two (2) academic years in the course.
(b). The women’s commissioner shall be a female and should have spent at least two (2) academic years in the course.
(c). The Vice-President, General Secretary, Organizing Secretary, and the
Financial Secretary should have spent at least one (1) academic year in the course.


5(iii). A nine member senate shall be formed comprising; the chairman, the class president and any other (one) person elected from each class in the KNUST- MELTSA.
The chairperson of the Senate should have spent at least two (2) academic years in the course.
The incoming chairperson of the Senate must be an active member of the outgoing Senate, and must be attested by the outgoing senate.


5(iv). A General Assembly shall comprise of full members of KNUST-MELTSA.


5(v). An officer of the association shall be: Any Executive Committee Member Any Standing Committee Chairperson

4. ASSOCIATION’S CLOTHES

The official association clothes were introduced by the 2017/2018 year administration under the leadership of President Dasaa Frank Yelevuuro. It has since been used by the association for most official programmes.

The Association’s T-Shirt official design was introduced and designed by the 2019/2020 administration under the leadership of President Ebenezer Senu.

5. ASSOCIATION’S WEBSITE

The KNUST – MELTSA website (blog) was initiated, architectured, completed; from 13th-31st August and launched on 1st September, 2020 by President Ebenezer Senu (2019/2020).

Members can easily download all their course materials and lecture slides at the comfort of their home and at their convenience, inclusive are Past questions and solved quizzes and trial questions. This will help reduce the stress of members looking for where to get lecture materials. It also includes many important features required as a professional body.

KNUST-MELTSA is the first MELTSA association to own and launch an association website….

  • Blog designer and administrator: The website was created and designed in partnership with WACKY’S BLOG a blogging brand own by Master Uwakmfon Paul, a level 200 (2020/2021) member of the association. He is also the Administrator of the Association’s website

6. NAME TAG

The name tag was introduced by the 2019/2020 administration under the leadership of President Ebenezer Senu. During the association first general assembly held on 27th day of September, 2019, the proposal for the project was presented and introduced to the house by Hon. Speaker – Master Stephen Opoku. The project was then proceed and completed by Master Datus Kwawu Nyamedi(Financial Secretary).

Members of the association can easily be identified by their name tags during Lab and Clinical sessions.

7. OFFICIAL LOGO FOR THE PRESIDENCY

The presidential seal/official logo was designed and adopted in 2021 by the Richard Kwabla Adzika led administration.

8. AWARDS

On the 22nd of November, 2020 under the able leadership of President Ebenezer SENU, the association was awarded the Best Medical Laboratory school in Ghana by NAHSAG..

National Health Students Association of Ghana (NAHSAG) is a body comprising: FG-MELTSA(Federation of Ghana Medical Laboratory Students’ Associations) , UNSAG(University Nursing Students Association), GMNTA(Ghana Nurse-Midwife trainees Association), FG-MSA(Federation of Ghana Medical Students Association), PASAG(Physician Assistantship Students Association of Ghana).
